Alternative Medicine for Bleeding Hemorrhoids

By | January 31, 2018

Preliminary-level treatments for bleeding hemorrhoids include high-fiber diets, oral re-hydration fluid intakes, prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesics (NSAIAs), sitz baths, dietary fiber supplements, topical solutions and suppositories that have unsupported therapeutic claims, and steroids. Primary-level surgical procedures like rubber band ligation, sclerotheraphy, and cauterization, will then be performed if no results have shown on the first level of treatment. The more invasive surgical operations like hemorrhoidectomy, transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization, and stapled hemorrhoidopexy, will be the last resorts in the treatment of severe cases of these anal blood vessel abnormalities.

But some people who suffer from such abnormality don’t want to undergo surgical procedures. Such people include those who are frightened of surgical operations, pregnant women who are also suffering from such bodily disorder, and those who don’t want to undergo surgical operations due to their religious backgrounds. These people are resorting to some forms of alternative medicine like acupuncture and homeopathy instead.

In acupuncture, the ear is regarded as the micro-system of the entire body; thus having the ears subjected to the auriculotheraphy (ear acupuncture) procedure that is believed to heal all diseases, disorders, and abnormalities of the body including the anal blood vessel disorders. But at present, no scientific study can relate auriculotheraphy and hemorrhoids, as well as other illnesses of the body, to each other.

Homeopathy, another form of alternative medicine that involves the hypothesis that the substances that cause diseases to healthy people will cure diseases of sick people, is another resort of people who have cases of bleeding anal blood vessels that cannot be treated by preliminary procedures. But homeopathic remedies are now found to be ineffective as evidenced by scientific researches; thus establishing no connection between hemorrhoids and homeopathy and yet regarding this form of alternative medicine as a form of quackery.

Anal blood vessel abnormalities are actually caused by unhealthy lifestyle: poor quality of nutrition, lack of physical activity, irregular and excessive bowel habits, pregnancy, genetics, and aging. The usual American diet today consists of foods that are low in dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is needed in ensuring regular bowel movements that are healthy for the hemorrhoids. Pregnancy induces intra-abdominal pressures that also culprits these abnormalities. Lack of exercise, along with poor diet, results in obesity that can also cause swollen anal blood vessels.

Proper and balanced nutrition (meaning amounts of intakes of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals, oils and sugars, fluids, and dietary fiber should be of adequate amounts), exercise and rest (not too little but not too much, just balanced), regular medical checkups especially for pregnant women and the elderly, avoidance of smoking, excessive alcohol, and all other harmful vices, and proper frequency of defecation, are all needed in order to prevent body illnesses such as anal blood vessel disorders. A daily dietary fiber intake of 20-35 grams a day for American adults (18 grams for British adults), and 5 grams plus the age in years for American children everyday is recommended to be included in the diet.

If you don’t want to suffer from bleeding hemorrhoids, but you also don’t want to undergo surgical operations, go for a healthy and active lifestyle.
