Stress is a major contributor to serious diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and depression. Surprisingly, medical experts have found that even hemorrhoids can be a result of stress and anxiety experienced on a daily basis. Though stress is a psychological issue, it may manifest in unhealthy coping mechanisms that subsequently lead to physical health problems.
Let us first discuss the root of this medical condition. Hemorrhoids, or sometimes referred to as piles, is a condition wherein the veins in the anus or within the rectum are swollen, thus resulting to tissue protrusion. The affected area will have a burning and itching sensation, and in some cases bleeding occurs. Nevertheless, various drugs and home remedies can help relieve the symptoms and cease the swelling.
Little doses of stress are not bad for the health because it keeps us alert and sharpens our decision-making abilities. However, studies have shown that people who experience stress frequently or are mentally unable to cope with stress are more prone to develop gastro-intestinal problems such as diarrhea or constipation. Both diarrhea and constipation puts pressure on the rectum and causes the blood vessels to become swollen.
In addition, people who are unable to handle stress become hypertensive. Hypertension causes increased blood flow to the veins in the body, including those in the rectum and anal area.
Now that we have proven how stress can contribute to a person’s hemorrhoid problem, we must discuss how we can eliminate this medical condition by learning to cope with life’s stressors.
1. Exercise
Exercise does not only help eliminate stress but helps keep your body healthy. Go jogging or brisk walking for 30 minutes everyday, or do some swimming for less impact on your joints. Exercise makes you sweat, helps boost your self-esteem and eliminates anxiety and depression. Moreover, cardio and water exercises can help stretch muscle tissue without the pain and discomfort. On the other hand, refrain from exercises that will put pressure on your lower back and butt, such as heavy weights, horseback riding or cycling.
2. Healthy Diet
Replace high-cholesterol and spicy food with elements of the food pyramid that are rich in fiber. Eat a lot of whole wheat bread, brown rice, oatmeal, nuts, broccoli, carrots and legumes. Instead of drinking coffee, colas or other artificial beverages, buy a juicer and create a drink made of berries, cucumbers, tomatoes and other citrus fruits to keep your body hydrated. A healthy diet will not only keep your digestion healthy but will keep your brain and emotions positively stable.
3. Have Your Alone Time
Allot time for yourself everyday and do something relaxing. Meditation will enable you to cleanse your thoughts and eliminate all the negativity experienced throughout the day. You will become more focused and positive in handling life’s daily experiences. You may also go for a short hike in the woods or listen to music in your room. Acquire a relaxing hobby such as cross-stitching or painting. Spending quality time by yourself will help clear your mind, free you from stress and allow you to overcome hemorrhoids.
