Other than traditional herbal remedies there are many other natural ways of avoiding the causes and relieving the symptoms of hemorrhoids. The condition can be treated quickly and effectively with surgery; however there have been cases where several natural remedies have been able to treat the condition just as effectively. This more natural way may be slightly slower than the ‘quick fix’ surgical option, however there are fewer risks.

One of the nest natural remedies for hemorrhoids is fibre. Fibre has a consistent beneficial effect in combating the conditions various causes and symptoms. Fibre can soften stool making it easier to have bowel movements and reduce the need for straining. It also has a positive effect on some of the other symptoms including discomfort, itching and pain. There are many ways to get more fibre. Eating foods with high fibre content such as grains and vegetables is a good start. There are also many fibre supplements on the market, including Psyllium which is a powdered and inexpensive option. Whatever the source of fibre, it is very important that sufficient water is drunk with it otherwise constipation may worsen.

Similarly triphala is a compound of three fruits and is well known as a bowel tonic that aids the digestive system and gently relieves constipation without harshly stimulating bowel movements. It can be topically applied as a compress or ointment.

Bioflavonoids are compounds found in certain types of plants. They strengthen and stabilize blood vessel walls and decrease inflammation. They have been found to lessen pain and anal discharge during acute hemorrhoid attacks. While there are side effects to bioflavonoids, they are mild and rare, making them an ideal candidate to treat hemorrhoids in pregnancy. The bioflavonoids found in citrus fruits are very beneficial, and daflon, a product made using citrus bioflavonoids, has been found to greatly improve hemorrhoid symptoms in pregnant women. Within a week of taking it the symptoms of pain, bleeding, itching and discharge should have been reduced.

Witch hazel compress or cream is made out of the leaves and bark of a plant called Hamamelis virginiana and is a drug store staple. While not to be taken internally, witch hazel compress or cream is to be applied topically to the anal area in the form of witch hazel ointment, distilled liquid or medicated pads. Working as an astringent, witch hazel decreases hemorrhoid symptoms, primarily bleeding, itching and swelling.

There are other basic ways of preventing hemorrhoids or lessening the severity of the symtoms: Adequate water intake is essential as it aids the digestion process as well as keeps stool soft. A minimum of six glasses of water a day is recommended. Secondly an adequate diet goes a long way to help with hemorrhoids as low fat and high fibre diets help with bowel movements. Finally it is of utmost importance that a regular exercise regime is observed. As well as having wide and general health benefits, exercise keeps your body ticking over making sure everything is working as it should be.
