Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels located at the anal canal. As with other medical conditions and things, there are a number of myths that surround it. Myths abound that hemorrhoids:
•Can cause cancer
•Is caused by black peppers
•Afflicts Only the elderly
•Is not curable naturally
Hemorrhoidal myths:
No.1 It Causes Cancer
Hemorrhoidal conditions are characterized by enlarged and inflamed rectal blood vessels. This characteristic is not cancer-related as cancer is most often caused by the out of control division of cells. Colorectal cancer or cancer of the rectum does not originate from a hemorrhoidal condition. Some individuals afflicted with colorectal cancer have a higher risk of contracting a hemorrhoidal condition due to the added pressure on the veins in the anal canal. This is attributed to the tumour growth of the cancer. There is similarity of symptoms (blood in the stool, bleeding in the rectum) between a hemorrhoidal condition and a colorectal cancer. With this symptoms-similarity it is best to see your doctor to have a proper diagnosis of the condition.
NO.2 It is Caused by Black Peppers
Some individuals suffer from irritation of the rectum and rectal itchiness after consumption of large quantities of spicy foods. This may be the reason and origin of this myth. Consumption of black pepper in moderation does not lead or cause hemorrhoids. This condition is clinically proven to be caused by intense pressure on the rectal veins.
NO.3 Afflicts Only the Elderly
Age is a risk factor in contracting the hemorrhoidal condition as there is general weakening of the blood vessels in and around the rectum. Such general weakening makes older people susceptible to contracting this condition, but other factors may cause the hemorrhoidal condition at any other age, such as:
•poor bathroom habits that includes: forced and long straining during bowel movements, prolonged sitting in the toilet seat
•poor diet
•prolonged sitting or standing
•Obesity
•pregnancy
NO.4 Is Not Curable
Rough estimates have it that hemorrhoidal conditions afflict half of the American populace before reaching the age of 50. This estimate places the medical condition among the top most common diseases. Relieving the burning, itching and discomfort can be made by taking a Sitz bath. This bath is done by sitting on water up to the level of the hips. Taking of analgesics is also another alternative to ease the pain of the disease. Surgery is also an option for those suffering from severe affliction.
